What Makes a PNG Transparent?

Unlike JPEG files which only have Red, Green, and Blue (RGB) color channels, PNG files can include a fourth channel called the Alpha Channel. This channel defines the opacity of every individual pixel, from 0% (completely transparent) to 100% (completely solid).

When you download an image from the web that looks like it has a checkerboard pattern, you may find that the pattern is actually baked into the pixels—meaning the background is not actually transparent! Here is how to fix it instantly.
